Privacy Policy
The short version
Valor is a private place to build habits, pray, and walk with a small group of brothers. We collect only what the app needs to work. We don’t sell your data, we don’t show ads, and there are no advertising or analytics trackers in the app or on this website. You can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app at any time.
“We” means Modern Man of Valor, run by Spencer Sutton in Birmingham, Alabama. This policy covers the Valor app and modernmanofvalor.com.
What we collect
Your account. Your email address and a password. Passwords are stored only as a secure hash; no one, including us, can read them.
If you choose, the Weekly Note: when you save your account you can tick a box to get it. Only then do we use your email to send it, and you can unsubscribe from any issue.
What you put in the app. Your habits and daily check-ins, including sexual purity check-ins; your streaks; your captives; your Field Map and Return & Report worksheets; your prayers in Intercede; saved verses, highlights and notes; your assessment results; which readings, videos and Psalms you have finished.
What you share with a tribe. The display name you choose, and the posts, prayer requests, voice memos, photos, comments and reactions you share there, along with the brothers you pray for.
Your device. If you turn on notifications, a push token that lets us send them to your phone, your time zone so they arrive at the right hour, and your notification choices.
On this website. If you join the Weekly Note or the app waitlist, your email address. If you take the assessment here, your email and your answers.
We do not collect your location, your contacts, or anything from other apps.
Who can see it
Only you can see your habits, check-ins, captives, worksheets, Intercede prayers, notes and assessment results. They are protected at the database level so that another account cannot read them.
Your tribe sees what you post there, your display name, and a short daily report of which habits you held and missed the day before. That report is posted for you each morning, because brothers can’t pray for what they don’t know. Only members of that tribe can see it.
Notifications say who did something and what kind of thing it was, never the words themselves.
Reports. If someone reports a post, a copy of that post is sent to us so we can review it.
Who handles it for us
We use a small number of companies to run Valor. Each only receives what it needs:
- Supabase stores your account and everything in the app.
- Expo delivers notifications and app updates.
- Apple delivers notifications to iPhone and distributes the app.
- Vercel hosts this website.
- Resend sends account and report emails.
- Beehiiv sends the Weekly Note, if you subscribe.
We don’t sell or rent your information to anyone, and we don’t share it with advertisers. We would only disclose it if the law required us to.
How long we keep it
Everything stays until you delete it or delete your account. A guest account you never save is deleted after 30 days without use. Voice memos and photos shared in a tribe delete themselves after 30 days. Records of sent notifications are removed after 30 days.
Trying Valor without an account
If you tap “Look around first,” Valor gives you an account with no email or password so you can try it. It isn’t tied to an email, so only that phone can open it. If you save it, it becomes a normal account with everything you did. If you don’t, and don’t open Valor for 30 days, it is deleted along with everything in it.
Deleting your account
In the app, go to Home, then Settings, then Delete account. This permanently deletes your account and everything above: your data, and every post, voice memo, photo and comment you shared. If you lead a tribe, it passes to the brother who has been in it longest, so the rest of the group keeps its history.
You can also email spencer.sutton@mac.com from the address on your account and we will delete it for you. To leave the Weekly Note, use the unsubscribe link in any email.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and access is limited by account. No system is perfectly secure, and if something went wrong that affected your information, we would tell you.
Age
You must be at least 13 to use Valor, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian’s permission. We don’t knowingly collect information from children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has an account, we will delete it. A parent who believes this has happened can email us.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we’ll say so in the app or by email before it takes effect. The date at the top shows the latest version.
